Dates: Friday, March 12th & 19th
Skill Level: Beginner
Instructor: Jeff Tobin (KJP Staff Member)
Join us to build your very own river table (up to 2' x 4'). You will leave the class with a completed table that is ready for legs (metal table legs will be available at 20% off for students). Students are welcome to participate with a partner.
Day 1 - You will start the class by selecting either a maple, walnut or cherry live edge slab. You will learn the proper techniques to prepare your wood, build your box/framework properly to contain your epoxy pour. Students will then select their pigments/colours before final mixing and pouring commences. Projects will be left to cure until the second day of the class.
Day 2 - Students will return to their tables removed from their mold and flattened. The class will all head to the shop to watch one of the tables flattened to learn and understand the process before returning to the workshop. A large part of this session will address proper sanding techniques for epoxy and steps needed to take before applying a finish. The tables will be squared off using a track saw, and a chamfer will be applied to the tables using a router. Students will apply a coat of Rubio Monocoat to the bottom of their table. If legs are purchased here (or brought in) they will be guided on how to properly fasten the legs using insert nuts and bolts.
All tools and materials will be provided, including: 12L Epoxy Kit ($399.95), 100mL Rubio Monocoat Pure ($29.95), a bucket, Maple, Walnut or Cherry live edge slab, and all materials for box mold. Approximate retail value of $615. Students may have up to 1/2 of their epoxy kit left for future projects at home, depending on how wide of a river they pour and which slab they use.
In the class you will be using a track saw, router, palm sander, miter saw and drill.
All skill levels are welcome, but this class will move at a pace comfortable for a beginner making their first epoxy table.
