4/4 Spalted Maple
It’s amazing how different every board of Spalted Maple looks!
Normally Maple is a white cream colour, but the spalting creates an amazing kaleidoscope of colours and patterns ranging from white to dark black lines.
Spalted material is a challenge to come by - as the pattern seen in this lumber is caused by fungi and decay of the wood itself. When harvesting Spatled Maple, it’s important to harvest the lumber before the decay makes the wood soften beyond usability, but long enough that the coloured has taken effect. The drying process of the lumber halts the decaying process, creating a durable wood with stunning patterns.
However, this does mean that you should expect some defects in this wood - from knots to dents and some rough areas that felt a little more decay than others before the drying process kicked in. Our shipping team will do their best to pick a clean, usable board for you, but defects may still be present! You can expect your boards to be anything from a mixture of white lines to striking black streaks. This wood looks great as an accent wood - a little bit goes a long way! Working with spalted wood can be a challenge. There are variable densities to contend with, so be sure to keep that in mind while sanding.
Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Spalted Maple Lumber.
