Balsa Wood

Balsa Wood is the go-to choice for model building!

This lightweight yet sturdy wood is great for model airplanes, fishing lures, carving, musical instruments, and more. It is the lightest and softest of all commercial woods.

Choose from 4 different sizes of our Balsa wood:

  • 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 35-1/2"
  • 1-1/2" x 2" x 35-1/2"
  • 2" x 2-3/8" x 35-1/2"
  • 2" x 3-1/8" x 35-1/2"

Please note that dimensions may vary +/- 1/4".

Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling.

Colour and Workability

Colour and Workability

Due to its fine grain, you'll find that Balsa wood takes sanding smoothly and holds paint well. This wood has a coarse texture and light, creamy colour that will provide a versatile base for any of your carving needs. Due to the incredible texture and density of Balsa wood, it can be prone to dents and marks if not handled with care.

Recommended Finish

Done carving and ready to finish? Our Livos Natural Oil Finish works wonders for brushing on, or dipping more intricate pieces when ensuring complete coverage for all nooks and crannies. This finish can be applied in multiple coats without sanding your delicate carving, and provides exceptional shine and protection.

If you’re carving something for use with food - such as a spoon or other utensil - we recommend our all-natural Honey Bee’s Natural Wood Cream.

Fantastic Customer Service

It was my first time dealing with KJP Select Hardwoods and I’ll definitely be coming back for more balsa wood for my African Grey parrot.

Customer service was impeccable along with the speedy delivery.

Very pleased

The balsa I ordered came quickly and looks great. There are a couple small cracks on each end but I can work around that.

Rough Cut Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who enjoy working with machinery or hand tools to mill their own boards.

We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough Cut Lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough Cut Lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.

For example: 4/4 x 6" x 24”

You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”
