Why Do We Use Rubio Monocoat?

This month on our blog, we’re highlighting one of our favourite companies - Rubio Monocoat.

When it comes to wood finishes, Rubio is one of the best in the game. The “Monocoat” in their name comes from their easy-to-use finishes - you only need one coat.

We’re going to highlight some of our most-loved products, and tell you why we’re proud to have Canada’s widest selection of Rubio products. Let’s get started.

Rubio Oil Plus 2C

Our favourite Rubio product is the Oil Plus 2C - though it’s hardly fair to call it a single product; it comes in an astonishing 55 different colours. With a single coat, it:

• Protects wood from water, heat, and daily wear & tear
• Enhances the feel of wood
• colours the wood (if you want!)

You don’t have to get colour-infused oil with Rubio. The Pure Plus 2C is untinted, so it simply brings out the natural colour of your wood. The Natural Plus 2C is tinted with white and yellow tones - it’s barely there, but some people find it enhances the colour of wood in subtle, warm ways.

Of course, if you don’t feel like going with a more natural look, you can opt for a bold colour, like Ruby or Sapphire. You can even mix Plus 2C colours together to create custom colours.

Best of all, Oil Plus 2C is made from modified linseed oil and contains absolutely no VOCs, no water, and no solvents. This makes it a great choice for people with sensitivities to VOCs, and means you can apply it indoors without worrying about fumes or air quality. It's worth noting that "zero VOC" doesn't mean the product is purely linseed oil. Rubio uses a proprietary molecular bonding process that modifies the oil, but the end result is a finish that is genuinely non-toxic and safe to use in enclosed spaces.

All of these qualities make Oil Plus 2C an incredible product for almost any wood. Though we wouldn’t recommend it for most outdoor use, it’s suitable for basically any indoor project.

Other Rubio products

Rubio produces a wide variety of other products - mostly as accessories to their Plus 2C line. You can get soaps, hand held applicators, surface care spray kits, cleaners, and a whole lot more. They also produce a single layer hybrid wood protector suitable for outdoor use.

Rubio has expanded their exterior line considerably in recent years. Beyond a single hybrid protector, they now offer a range of outdoor products including Rubio Monocoat Outdoor, which is designed specifically for exterior wood surfaces like decking, cladding, and garden furniture.
