A nice and easy white wood for hand carving! Basswood is an ideal carving wood for both beginners and experienced carvers. It has a smooth, fine grain which allows for detailed carvings. We will carefully handpick a basswood carving block set that has 9 PCS of approx 2" x 2" x 6" long.
Please note size +/- 1/4"
Looking for a longer length or something a bit different? Browse our Basswood Lumber page or email us to find out what else we may be able to offer.
I have been carving for many years. My venue is large 12in. to 14in. human figures using push tools (gouges and chisels).
My recent purchase of six 18 inch blocks is very disappointing.
The wood is (used four blocks so far) hard, swirl grain, and very dry with a consistent tear out tendency.
One method I use to determine grain consistency is to spray water on the wood (after cutting out a blank) to show the grain continuity.
I maintain my tools to a razor sharp condition.
I cannot in good conscience rate this wood any higher.

Would prefer 2 x 2 x 8
I was a little disappointed at first when I saw some live edge and a knot in the wood that would mean I would not get 2 of the particular carvings as intended. However, when I found it to be the best wood I’ve ever carved I immediately felt a lot happier. The quality of the basswood you sell is outstanding. I will be ordering more even though not as clear as I had hoped.
Cheers
