Appearance

As the name suggests, Bird's Eye Maple wood has varying numbers of tiny knots that are considered a growth anomaly. Other than the unique figure, the wood colour is identical to that of Hard Maple. It presents a beautiful amount of chatoyance that makes the surface dance when finished.

Workability

Like Hard Maple, Bird's Eye maple can be prone to tearout with dull tools. The figure only adds to the difficulty. A sharp plane, scraper or sanding are the best ways to surface this wood.

Uses

The majority of this figure will be found in veneer form and is prized by fine furniture and cabinet makers alike.

Additional Comments About Bird's Eye Maple Lumber

The figure is reportedly caused by unfavourable growing conditions for the tree. The tree attempts to start numerous new buds to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions the new shoots are aborted, and afterward a number of tiny knots remain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bird's Eye Maple Wood

What is Bird's Eye Maple?

Bird's Eye Maple is a rare figured form of Hard Maple featuring small, rounded 'eye' patterns scattered across the surface, created by abnormal fiber growth during the tree's development. It is highly prized for decorative furniture, musical instruments, gun stocks, veneer, and high-end woodworking accents.

What causes Bird's Eye figure in Maple?

The exact cause of Bird's Eye figure in Maple is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from the tree's attempts to form buds that never fully develop, combined with growth stress. The result is small, dimpled swirls in the wood fibers that create the signature circular 'eye' patterns visible on the finished surface.

How hard is Bird's Eye Maple?

Bird's Eye Maple has the same Janka hardness as Hard Maple approximately 1,450 lbf (6,450 N) since it is the same species (Acer saccharum). The 'Bird's Eye' name refers to the figure pattern, not a different species, so the wood retains all the hardness and durability properties of standard Hard Maple.

What is Bird's Eye Maple used for?

Bird's Eye Maple is used for furniture accents, tabletops, musical instrument backs and necks (particularly electric guitar and violin), gun stocks, decorative veneers, knife handles, and luxury woodturning. Its rarity and striking appearance command premium prices in specialty woodworking markets.

Is Bird's Eye Maple rare?

Yes. Bird's Eye Maple is relatively rare. Not all Maple trees develop the eye figure, and even among trees that do, the figure can vary greatly in intensity and coverage. High-density, consistent Bird's Eye figure is significantly rarer and more valuable than lightly figured material.

What finish brings out Bird's Eye Maple's figure?

Oil-based finishes, Danish oil, hardwax oils, and lacquer all bring out the three-dimensional depth of Bird's Eye Maple's figure beautifully. The chatoyance — or shimmering effect — of the eyes is enhanced dramatically by a glossy or satin finish and by viewing the wood under raking light.

Is Bird's Eye Maple good for guitar necks?

Yes. Bird's Eye Maple is a highly desirable material for electric guitar necks and fretboards. Its extreme hardness provides excellent durability and a fast-feeling surface, and the Bird's Eye figure produces a visually spectacular result. Many premium and custom guitar builders use Bird's Eye Maple as an upgrade option.

How does Bird's Eye Maple compare to Curly Maple?

Both Bird's Eye and Curly Maple are figured forms of Hard Maple, but the patterns differ significantly. Curly Maple displays wavy, undulating stripes ('tiger stripes') across the grain, while Bird's Eye Maple features scattered circular eye patterns. Both are equally prized, though the preference is largely aesthetic and project-dependent.

Is Bird's Eye Maple expensive?

Yes. Bird's Eye Maple commands a significant premium over standard Hard Maple due to its rarity and high decorative demand. The price increases further with higher eye density, larger board dimensions, and clearer figure. Veneer sheets offer a more cost-accessible way to incorporate Bird's Eye Maple into projects.

Can Bird's Eye Maple be stained?

Bird's Eye Maple can be stained, but like all maples it is prone to blotching due to its dense, irregular grain. Most woodworkers prefer clear finishes to showcase the natural figure rather than staining. If color is desired, a dye rather than a pigment stain produces more even penetration and better results.
