Appearance

The heartwood colour is quite variable and ranges from pale pink to a deep reddish brown. Its colour tends to darken with age and the quarter-sawn surfaces display a gorgeous ribbon-stipe figure.

Workability

The grain can range from straight to interlocked which can pose some problems when surfacing with a hand tool. That being said, it is relatively easy to work and takes glue and finishes well.

Uses

This wood has a whole range of uses that include interior trim, furniture, boat building, turning, veneer, and plywood.

Additional Comments

African Mahogany can display some striking chatoyance that makes the wood surface look like it moves and dances.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mahogany Wood

What is Mahogany wood used for?

Mahogany is used for fine furniture, cabinetry, boat building, musical instruments (guitars, pianos), doors, windows, and decorative veneers. It has been one of the world's premier cabinet and furniture woods for centuries, prized for its workability, stability, beautiful grain, and warm reddish-brown color.

What color is Mahogany?

Mahogany heartwood ranges from a pale pinkish-brown when freshly cut to a deeper reddish-brown with age and light exposure. It often displays an attractive ribbon or interlocked grain that produces a shimmering chatoyance when quarter-sawn. Its warm, rich color deepens beautifully with finishing.

How hard is Mahogany?

Genuine Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) has a Janka hardness of approximately 800–900 lbf, making it a relatively soft hardwood. This softer nature is actually an advantage, as it makes Mahogany exceptionally easy to work with hand and machine tools while still being stable and durable for fine furniture.

What species is 'true' Mahogany?

True or genuine Mahogany refers to Swietenia species, particularly Swietenia macrophylla (Honduran or Big-leaf Mahogany) and Swietenia mahagoni (Cuban Mahogany). Cuban Mahogany is now largely unavailable due to trade restrictions. African Mahogany (Khaya species) and Sapele are common and high-quality alternatives widely sold today.

Is Mahogany easy to work with?

Mahogany is considered one of the easiest hardwoods to work with. It machines cleanly, planes smoothly, glues well, holds screws reliably, and responds beautifully to all types of finishing. Its straight, even grain and low tendency to warp or check make it a favourite among furniture makers and instrument builders.

Is Honduran Mahogany endangered?

Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is listed on CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade is regulated. It is not technically endangered, but harvest is restricted to prevent over-exploitation. Most commercially available Mahogany lumber today comes from managed plantations or is African Mahogany (Khaya spp.), which is not under CITES restriction.

What is the best finish for Mahogany?

Mahogany responds beautifully to oil-based finishes, shellac, lacquer, and varnish. Traditional furniture makers favor shellac for its warm, amber tone that enhances Mahogany's reddish hue. A hand-rubbed oil finish is also popular for a more natural look. Avoid water-based finishes, which can slightly grey the warm color.

What is African Mahogany?

African Mahogany refers to Khaya species, particularly Khaya ivorensis, native to west and central Africa. It is not a true Swietenia species but shares many desirable properties: similar color, grain, workability, and appearance. African Mahogany is widely used as a substitute for increasingly restricted Honduran Mahogany.

Is Mahogany good for guitars?

Yes, Mahogany is one of the most important tonewoods in guitar making. It is used for guitar bodies, necks, and backs because it produces a warm, full-bodied tone with strong mid-range presence. Acoustic and electric guitars from brands like Gibson have traditionally featured Mahogany as a primary tonewood for decades.

How does Mahogany compare to Cherry wood?

Mahogany and Cherry are both premium furniture woods with similar workability and warm tones. Mahogany is softer and more stable, making it easier to work in large forms like tables and doors. Cherry is slightly harder and undergoes a dramatic color change with age. Mahogany is more traditional for formal furniture; Cherry for American Shaker and transitional styles.
