Appearance

Despite the name, it’s not really orange…more of a golden to bright yellow. Over time the wood darkens to a medium brown.

Workability

Osage Orange is a difficult wood to work with because it is extremely hard and dense. It turns very well and has no issues with gluing or finishing.

Uses

Bow making, instruments, and fence posts.

Additional Comments

Osage Orange is a gnarly tree that often has a crooked trunk that makes it impossible to use as lumber. That being said, the wood is very stable and bends without breaking which explains its use by bowyers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Osage Orange Wood

What is Osage Orange wood used for?

Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera), also called Hedge Apple or Bois d'arc, is used for fence posts, tool handles, archery bows, musical instrument components, turning, and decorative woodworking. Native Americans historically prized it as the finest bow wood in North America, and its extreme density makes modern fence posts nearly indestructible.

How hard is Osage Orange?

Osage Orange has a Janka hardness of 2,040 lbf (9,070 N), making it one of the hardest domestic North American hardwoods. It exceeds Hard Maple, Hickory, and nearly all other domestic species in hardness, rivaling many tropical exotics in its resistance to denting and wear.

What color is Osage Orange?

Freshly cut Osage Orange has a vivid, bright golden-yellow to orange-yellow heartwood that is one of the most distinctive colors of any North American wood. However, it oxidizes rapidly and darkens to a rich, warm russet or olive-brown with prolonged UV exposure. UV-blocking finishes can help slow but not stop this color change.

Is Osage Orange rot-resistant?

Yes. Osage Orange has outstanding natural rot resistance — arguably the highest of any North American hardwood. Fence posts made from Osage Orange can last 40–100 years in the ground without treatment, far outlasting treated pine or even White Oak. Historically, it was the preferred fence post material throughout the Great Plains.

Is Osage Orange good for archery bows?

Yes. Osage Orange is considered by many bow makers to be the finest native North American bow wood. Its exceptional combination of compressive strength, tensile strength, flexibility, and density produces fast, efficient, durable selfbows. Native American tribes used Osage Orange bows extensively, and modern traditional archers continue to prize it highly.

Where does Osage Orange come from?

Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) is native to a small region of the south-central United States, primarily Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and was historically used by the Osage Nation people for bows, giving rise to its common name. It has since been widely planted throughout North America as a hedgerow and windbreak tree.

Is Osage Orange a good turning wood?

Yes. Osage Orange is an excellent turning wood. Its extreme hardness and fine grain allow very clean, crisp cuts on the lathe, and its vivid yellow-orange color (fresh) or rich russet-brown (aged) makes turned pieces visually striking. It polishes beautifully and is a popular choice for bowls, pens, and decorative objects.

Does Osage Orange change color?

Yes. Osage Orange undergoes one of the most dramatic color changes of any wood species. Freshly cut wood is vivid golden-yellow to bright orange, but it oxidizes rapidly with light exposure, eventually settling to a warm, rich russet or olive-brown. Applying a UV-inhibiting finish slows but cannot prevent this natural transformation.

Is Osage Orange easy to work with?

Osage Orange is challenging to work due to its extreme hardness and density. It dulls cutting tools very quickly and requires sharp, carbide-tipped blades. Despite these challenges, it turns and finishes beautifully, glues well, and its exceptional durability rewards the extra effort required to machine it effectively.

What is Osage Orange used for in fence posts?

Osage Orange fence posts are legendary for their longevity, lasting 40–100 years in the ground due to the wood's exceptional natural rot and insect resistance. Before treated wood became widely available in the 20th century, Osage Orange was the standard fence post material throughout the Great Plains and midwestern United States.
