Appearance

Knotty Pine refers to a grade of pine which includes knots within the wood which often gives a rustic look. In many cases, you can work around the knots to get smaller, clear pieces out. The wood is a pale yellow that sometimes has a reddish hue.

Workability

Pine works nicely with hand tools and power tools. It's an excellent wood for learning how to hand plane with because it forces the user to maintain super sharp tools. It glues well but tends to finish a bit blotchy if the wood isn’t sealed with shellac or sanding sealer first.

Uses

Pine is lightweight making it an excellent choice for tool boxes, though most of it gets used for construction lumber, interior millwork, and crate making.

Additional Comments

There is nothing quite as nice as the smell of freshly cut pine in the shop. It works well despite being quite soft and looks great with a hand planed surface.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pine Wood

What is Knotty Pine used for?

Knotty Pine is used for wall paneling, ceiling treatments, rustic furniture, cabinetry, shelving, flooring, and decorative interior millwork.

Is Knotty Pine a hardwood or softwood?

Knotty Pine is a softwood. Pine (Pinus species) is a conifer, making it a softwood by botanical classification. It is significantly softer and lighter than hardwoods, with a Janka hardness of approximately 380 lbf (1,690 N).

What color is Knotty Pine?

Knotty Pine has a creamy white to pale yellow sapwood and a warm honey-yellow to reddish-tan heartwood. Over time it turns into an amber color.

Is Knotty Pine good for furniture?

Knotty Pine can be used for tables, chairs, benches, and storage pieces.

How do you finish Knotty Pine?

For a natural look, a clear satin finish shows the grain and knots beautifully. Avoid water-based finishes directly on raw knots without sealing first.

Does Knotty Pine need to be sealed?

Yes. Knotty Pine knots contain resin that will bleed through paint and clear finishes over time if not properly sealed first.

Is Knotty Pine good for paneling?

Yes. Knotty Pine tongue-and-groove paneling is a classic choice for wall and ceiling treatments in rustic, cabin, and farmhouse interior designs.

What species of Pine is Knotty Pine?

Commercial Knotty Pine lumber typically comes from Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), Western White Pine (Pinus monticola), Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa), or Sugar Pine (Pinus lambertiana) depending on region.

Can Knotty Pine be stained?

Yes. Knotty Pine can be stained, but it requires careful preparation. Its irregular porosity (especially around knots) causes uneven stain absorption and potential blotching.
