S4S Ambrosia Maple Lumber - Thick

Wormy Maple lumber is one of the most unique types of wood!

What is Ambrosia Maple lumber? Well it's not actually a species - but rather two things that happen to the wood when it has been infested by the Ambrosia beetle! The most obvious is the tiny holes from the beetle boring through, but it also leaves some interesting streaking caused from a fungus it carries on it's legs. Of course it goes without saying all our lumber is kiln dried and these visitors are no longer an issue!

There can be a variance from batch to batch in terms of how much streaking we get - but we do try our best to send you the boards that have the most character. In regards to the tiny holes - they will need to be filled and it's a great opportunity to try our P-Tec Wood Filler

If you would like to do the milling yourself - try our 8/4 Rough Cut Ambrosia Maple Lumber for a more budget friendly version.

What can you expect?

We will carefully handpick a high quality board for you. We pay close attention to the wood species characteristics so we can send you a board that well represents each wood type.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term "surfaced" or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”

Rough Cut Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who enjoy working with machinery or hand tools to mill their own boards.

We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough cut lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough cut lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.

For example: 4/4 x (5-6”) x 24”

You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.

Very nice.

Very nice lumber. Even the rough cut needs very minimal planing to be perfect smooth.

I am sorry but I haven't decided what to do with it yet. I'm thinking Chess Board.
