Black Walnut’s heartwood ranges from pale brown to a dark chocolate brown. It is also known for having a red, purple, or grey cast and the sapwood ranges from pale yellow to almost white. It can present grain patterns like curl, crotch, and burl.
Black Walnut is a fan favourite of furniture makers in North America. Once you’ve worked Walnut you will quickly plan for the next time you will use it. The rich brown colour is unmistakable and pieces that live near sunlight lighten to a dark honey colour. The wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties making it an easy choice for most woodworkers.
If you would like to do the milling yourself - try our 4/4 Rough Cut Walnut Lumber for a more budget friendly version.
What can you expect?
We will carefully handpick a high quality board for you. We pay close attention to the wood species characteristics so we can send you a board that well represents each wood type. You can expect to have some sapwood although we do try our best to select boards that have at least one face that is only heartwood.
In order to offer more protective packing for shipping - our lengths are often 1/4" less than sizes listed. Need a longer length? Please email us for a quote.
S4S Lumber
Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.
The term "surfaced" or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.
For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”
Rough Cut Lumber
Who are they for? These are ideal for those who enjoy working with machinery or hand tools to mill their own boards.
We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough cut lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough cut lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.
For example: 4/4 x (5-6”) x 24”
You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.
This was the third attempt to get item. This was for a custom Christmas present. I ended up driving 200 plus miles round trip to get wood for said product at a cost of several hours and a lumber cost of 47 dollars all because you sent it out usps two times! You guys screwed the pooch after I had an Amazon representative promise it would be delivered by December 20. You were supposed to send it ups but you emailed it usps. We had to get this corrected again. Stop send usps. They are being destroyed by DeJoy. I have a rural address and our postal does not deliver we have a P.O. Box. You guys went to default settings which are different than postal. You guys fucked the pooch an anyone ordering from you should beware
Hi Phillip,
I'm inclined to think we don't suck and you may have your Christmas shopping a bit mixed up? We in fact did ship with UPS and we had your order out within 2 days. It would be highly unlikely that an Amazon rep called you about your KJP order since we have absolutely nothing to do with them - so you'd better check your phone to make sure it's working correctly. I hope you got your present made in time and if you need lumber again - give us another try. I think you'll find we are very good at following instructions :) Happy holidays.

Easy to order online instead purchasing lumber from Lowes store. One thing surprised me that one board had a nail in it and almost damaged to my planer.
It is been 12 days from my order, but I still did not receive my lumber yet.
Hi Rayden,
This holiday season between the Canadian postal strike and all the parcel carriers having volume issues around Black Friday and Christmas - many parcels are taking longer. We apoligize for the delay and hope you may reconsider your Rating score on the actual material when you recieve the lumber. Happy holidays - thanks very much!
