Appearance

Wenge has a distinctive look with a medium brown heartwood filled with nearly black streaks throughout. The grain is straight and extremely coarse.

Workability

This is not a wood species for the faint of heart. It is extremely difficult to work with hand or power tools and it will dull edges quickly. It doesn’t even sand well because of the changing densities in the wood. The pores are huge and require filling in order to achieve a level finish.

Uses

Wenge is used for furniture, turnings, and musical instruments.

Additional Comments

The slivers from this wood are plentiful and nasty. They often get lodged in the skin and can go septic. Wearing gloves can be helpful but not 100% foolproof.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wenge Wood

What is Wenge wood?

Wenge (Millettia laurentii) is a dark, dense African hardwood prized for its nearly black color, distinctive coarse grain, and high natural oils. It is used in furniture, flooring, musical instruments, cabinetry, and veneers, and is particularly popular for modern and contemporary design aesthetics.

What color is Wenge?

Wenge has a very dark espresso-brown to nearly black heartwood with fine lighter-colored veining running through it, producing a striking, dramatic appearance. The sapwood is pale yellow-white, creating high contrast. Wenge's color deepens further with age, becoming darker and richer over time.

How hard is Wenge?

Wenge has a Janka hardness of 1,630 lbf (7,250 N), making it one of the harder hardwoods available. Its density and hardness make it extremely durable for flooring, furniture, and high-wear applications, exceeding Red Oak, Hard Maple, and most domestic species.

Is Wenge good for flooring?

Yes, Wenge flooring is an excellent and visually striking choice, particularly for modern and contemporary interiors. Its Janka hardness (1,630 lbf) provides superior durability, and its near-black color with lighter grain lines creates a bold, dramatic floor. It pairs especially well with light-colored walls and minimalist furniture.

Is Wenge difficult to work with?

Wenge can be challenging to work due to its coarse, interlocked grain, which can splinter and cause tearout. Its very long, coarse splinters can be sharp hand protection is recommended. It dulls cutting tools moderately quickly and requires care when sanding. Pre-drilling is advisable before nailing or screwing.

Does Wenge need to be sealed?

Yes, Wenge should be properly sealed and finished despite its high natural oil content. For flooring, a penetrating hardwax oil or an oil-modified urethane is ideal. For furniture, Danish oil, hardwax oil, or lacquer are popular choices. Its natural oils can interfere with water-based finishes, so compatibility testing is recommended.

Where does Wenge come from?

Wenge is native to the tropical forests of central Africa, primarily found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, and Tanzania. It is harvested in these countries and exported globally as a premium exotic hardwood for both lumber and veneer.

Is Wenge sustainable?

Wenge is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to overexploitation and habitat loss. It is not currently listed under CITES but is subject to export restrictions in some countries. Purchasing from FSC-certified suppliers or seeking sustainably sourced alternatives is strongly recommended for environmentally responsible woodworking.

What is Wenge used for?

Wenge is used for high-end furniture, flooring, cabinetry, veneers, guitar fretboards, knife handles, decorative turning, and architectural millwork. Its dramatic dark color and fine natural veining are particularly sought after in modern and luxury interior design applications.

Can Wenge be used for guitar fretboards?

Yes, Wenge is a popular choice for guitar fretboards, particularly in bass guitars and seven-string electric guitars. Its hardness, density, and smooth surface provide excellent playability and durability. It offers a slightly warmer tone compared to ebony and a distinctive visual contrast on lighter-bodied instruments.
