Roasted Ash is thermally modified ash wood that has been heat-treated to enhance its stability, durability, and moisture resistance while deepening its color to warm caramel and rich brown tones. With its enhanced dimensional stability and attractive uniform appearance, it’s often used for furniture, cabinetry, and modern woodworking projects where both performance and a refined look are important.

Appearance

The torrefaction process gives the wood a uniform chocolate brown colour and the grain is quite coarse and strikes a strong resemblance to oak. Usually fairly straight-grained, you occasionally will find curly or figured boards.

Workability

Roasted White Ash works really well with both hand and power tools and it takes both glue and finish well.

Uses

White Ash has many uses including flooring, millwork, furniture and baseball bats. It also makes fantastic tool handles.

Additional Comments

Due to the emerald ash borer, hundreds of millions of ash trees have been decimated. Because of this, White Ash is starting to disappear from lumber yards and forests alike.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roasted Ash Wood

What is Roasted Ash?

Roasted Ash is White Ash (Fraxinus americana) that has been subjected to a high-heat, low-oxygen thermal modification process. This process dramatically changes the wood's properties, darkening its color to warm chocolate browns, significantly reducing its moisture absorption and swelling, and improving its dimensional stability without any chemicals.

What are the benefits of roasting wood?

Thermal modification (roasting) provides several key benefits: it reduces moisture absorption by 50% or more, significantly improves dimensional stability and resistance to warping, darkens the color to attractive brown tones, and can improve rot resistance. The process uses only heat and steam, no chemicals, making it an environmentally friendly treatment.

What color is Roasted Ash?

Roasted Ash has a distinctive warm, chocolate-brown to dark caramel color produced uniformly throughout the wood during the thermal modification process. The color is consistent through the full thickness of the board, unlike a surface stain. The tone varies slightly based on the intensity and duration of the roasting process.

Is Roasted Ash good for outdoor use?

Yes. Roasted Ash's improved moisture resistance and dimensional stability make it significantly more suitable for outdoor and high-humidity applications than unmodified Ash. Thermal modification improves its rot resistance, though it is still recommended to apply an exterior-grade oil or finish for maximum protection in fully exposed outdoor installations.

How does Roasted Ash compare to regular White Ash?

Roasted Ash and regular White Ash differ significantly in their properties. Roasted Ash absorbs 50–80% less moisture, has greatly improved dimensional stability, a darker brown color, and improved rot resistance. It is more stable in environments with seasonal humidity changes. Regular Ash is slightly stronger and harder, as roasting can slightly reduce mechanical strength.

What is Roasted Ash good for?

Roasted Ash is used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, exterior cladding, decking, bathroom furniture, saunas, and other applications where moisture stability and attractive coloring are important. Its improved properties make it suitable for applications where untreated Ash would be prone to movement or moisture absorption.

Is Roasted Ash food-safe?

Yes. Thermal modification is a purely physical process using only heat and steam, no chemicals or preservatives are added. Roasted Ash is considered food-safe for cutting boards and kitchen items when properly finished with food-safe oils or wax. It is also hypoallergenic and suitable for people sensitive to chemical wood treatments.

Does Roasted Ash lose hardness?

Yes. The roasting process reduces Ash's hardness slightly, typically by 10–20% compared to unmodified White Ash (Janka ~1,320 lbf). However, it remains a hard, serviceable wood suitable for most flooring and furniture applications. The significant improvement in stability and moisture resistance is considered a worthwhile trade-off for many applications.

What finish works best on Roasted Ash?

Penetrating oil finishes, hardwax oils, and exterior-grade oils work best on Roasted Ash. The thermal modification process reduces the wood's natural porosity, which can affect finish adhesion. Light surface sanding and degreasing before finishing help achieve the best adhesion. Avoid water-based finishes, which may not bond as effectively to the modified surface.

Is Roasted Ash sustainable?

Roasted Ash is a sustainable choice, particularly because thermal modification extends the usable life of domestic White Ash, a species significantly impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. Using salvaged or sustainably harvested Ash and extending its durability through roasting is considered a highly responsible approach to domestic wood consumption.
