Appearance

The heartwood is a nice medium reddish brown with dark brown or black streaking. Tigerwood darkens with age and typically has a wavy or interlocked grain.

Workability

Despite its high density, this wood tends to work well with both hand tools and machines. Like other woods, areas of figure or irregular grain can lead to tearout. Tigerwood is extremely water resistant making it difficult to glue with water-based adhesives.

Uses

Commonly used on specialty items like pool cues, archery bows and knife handles, it also gets used for furniture, cabinets and flooring.

Additional Comments

Tigerwood has excellent weathering and rot resistant properties making it a good candidate for outdoor furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tigerwood

What is Tigerwood?

Tigerwood (Astronium graveolens or Lovoa trichilioides) is a tropical hardwood that has a reddish-brown to orange-brown background with dark brown or black irregular grain stripes, resembling a tiger's markings.

What does Tigerwood look like?

Tigerwood features a vivid reddish-orange to reddish-brown background with dark brown or black grain streaks running through the wood.

How hard is Tigerwood?

Tigerwood (Astronium graveolens) has a Janka hardness of approximately 2,170 lbf (9,640 N), making it significantly harder than most domestic hardwoods.

Is Tigerwood good for flooring?

Yes. Tigerwood is an excellent flooring choice for high-traffic areas due to its hardness (Janka ~2,160 lbf).

Where does Tigerwood come from?

Tigerwood (Astronium graveolens) is native to Central and South America, particularly Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Brazil.

Is Tigerwood good for outdoor decking?

Tigerwood has natural decay resistance that makes it suitable for outdoor decking applications.

Does Tigerwood fade?

Yes. Tigerwood's vivid orange-red color fades and mellows with UV exposure, gradually shifting to a more uniform reddish-brown over time. Applying UV-inhibiting deck oils or exterior finishes significantly slows this process.

Is Tigerwood easy to work with?

Tigerwood is challenging to work due to its extreme hardness. It dulls cutting tools quickly, requires carbide-tipped blades, and must be pre-drilled before nailing or screwing.

What finish is best for Tigerwood floors?

Oil-based polyurethane is the most durable finish for Tigerwood flooring, providing excellent protection against the heavy traffic this hard wood is often chosen for. Hardwax oils are also popular for a more natural appearance and easier maintenance. Always degreasing the surface with acetone before finishing improves adhesion on this naturally oily wood.
