4/4 Rough Cut Roasted Bird's Eye Maple Lumber

You will always recognize the unique figure of Bird's Eye Maple!

As the name suggests, Bird's Eye Maple has varying numbers of tiny knots that are considered a growth anomaly. Other than the unique figure, the wood colour is identical to that of Hard Maple. It presents a beautiful amount of chatoyance that makes the surface dance when finished. The figure is reportedly caused by unfavourable growing conditions for the tree. The tree attempts to start numerous new buds to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions the new shoots are aborted, and afterward a number of tiny knots remain.

Like Hard Maple, Bird's Eye maple can be prone to tearout with dull tools. The figure only adds to the difficulty. A sharp plane, scraper or sanding are the best ways to surface this wood.

The majority of this figure will be found in veneer form and is prized by fine furniture and cabinet makers alike.

Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Roasted Bird's Eye Maple Lumber.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”

Great customer service

I placed my very first order with KJP last week for some 4/4 rough birdseye maple, ziricote and leopard wood. When the pieces arrived I was less than impressed with the quality of the wood that showed up. Several pieces had serious flaws in them and the birdseye maple lacked any real quantity of birdseyes in it. I contact KJP to let them know and they immediately remedied the situation. That same day replacement boards were sent out with an apology and the boards that showed up the following day were excellent quality. It's rare to get this level of customer service these days and I have zero hesitation about ordering more lumber from them again. Great company.

The wood is stunning! I have ordered this wood from KJP one other time and my projects came out beautifully, which lead me to my second order. I finished my pieces with Danish oil, and the wood lit up a gorgeous warm orange-ish color.
