8/4 Rough Cut Butternut Lumber

The White Walnut that is great for carving!

Known as Walnut’s country cousin, Butternut is closely related to black walnut and is a joy to use. Due to a fungal disease, there is a rapid decline in the species and the tree is protected in Canada. The color ranges from light to medium tan with contrasting grain lines that form distinct patterns. The sapwood is a pale-yellow color. The grain is fairly coarse and has a natural luster.

Butternut is wonderful to work with hand and power tools, although its softness can lead to fuzzy surfaces left behind by planing and sanding. Make sure your tools are sharp or work through to finer sandpapers.

Be sure to check out our Carving section for a wider selection of Butternut carving options!

Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Butternut Lumber.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”

Ok

I had one piece that was beautiful but the second one toward the end was a big knot and not sure if I can use it for my project. On the positive side the quickness of fulfilling my order was amazing. I will try another order to see how it goes because of their fast delivery

I received an order of various 8/4 hardwoods. Came as advertised, quick delivery and ready to process. Will order again in the future. Shopping a little pricey but is what it is
