4/4 Rough Cut Hickory Lumber

Shagbark Hickory wood is not just for flooring!

Hickory wood is among the hardest and strongest of woods native to North America. On average, Hickory is denser, stiffer, and harder than either White Oak or Hard Maple.

The heartwood is light to medium brown featuring a reddish hue and the sapwood is a pale yellow-brown. The grain is generally straight with occasional wave.

Tool handles, wheel spokes, baseball bats,  and flooring; hickory is commonly used where strength or shock-resistance is important.

Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Hickory Lumber.

Rough Cut Lumber

We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough Cut Lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough Cut Lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.

For example: 4/4 x 6" x 24”

You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”

Great hardwood

I purchased several rough cut long hickory planks for bookshelves (tired of shelves sagging under the weight of my hardcover collections). The 4 boards I purchased fit the bill. A little trimming on the tablesaw and some sanding to 220 grit, these are a beautiful addition to my home office.

Last order review

My last order was several rough cut 4/4 boards of varying species. Just a little jointing, planing and re-sawing and they are beautiful and perfect for my box making students! Another great order.

Exactly as expected

The board arrived quickly. The dimensions are accurate, and the milling required will be about as you'd expect with rough cut wood. It was free of any major cracks or voids. In my case, I use hickory mainly in place of plywood for certain shop-made tools (mallet heads, tool handles, etc.) and jigs, as for a hardwood it's inexpensive, dense, and is easily worked.
