S4S Walnut Lumber - Thick

Black Walnut wood is a fan favourite of furniture makers in North America!

Black Walnut’s heartwood ranges from pale brown to a dark chocolate brown. It is also known for having a red, purple, or grey cast and the sapwood ranges from pale yellow to almost white. It can present grain patterns like curl, crotch, and burl.

Black Walnut is a fan favourite of furniture makers in North America. Once you’ve worked Walnut you will quickly plan for the next time you will use it. The rich brown colour is unmistakable and pieces that live near sunlight lighten to a dark honey colour. The wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties making it an easy choice for most woodworkers.

If you would like to do the milling yourself - try our 8/4 Rough Cut Walnut Lumber for a more budget friendly version.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term "surfaced" or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”

Rough Cut Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who enjoy working with machinery or hand tools to mill their own boards.

We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough cut lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough cut lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.

For example: 4/4 x (5-6”) x 24”

You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.

Big wane and splits/checks

Bought and had 2x 4ft 5/4 rough cut walnut boards shipped. Both arrived with a significant wane down the length - one almost 19 inches long, losing just under 3/4 thickness and 2 inches width. Other less severe but still a significant % of board length. Small splits and checks at each end. Very disappointing.

Sorry for the lower quality on this item - we missed the mark. We would be happy to offer you a replacement or refund to make it right. Thank you!

Flat, straight, smooth and true

As ever, all boards were flat, straight, true and were nicely sanded. The walnut is nicely figured and the grain will pop in any project. Some tear-out where it was cut to length but that will be trimmed anyway.

Nice board, but not S4S. KJP made it right.

I ordered S4S walnut, but I had a rare occurrence with KJP. The board I received had significant rough planer gouges and tearout on both sides. It was also about a degree out of square. I had to remove over 1/16" of thickness and do additional mill work. I contacted KJP and they immediately put a significant partial refund on my credit card, which just about made up for the additional time and abrasives I spent. I appreciate the real customer service. No matter how careful you are, stuff happens, so it's good to know they'll stand behind their products when something isn't right.
