Example of a Sapele floating shelf

How will you be mounting your hardwood shelf to the wall?

FLOATING SHELF:
A hardwood floating shelf is mounted directly to the wall with a hidden bracket, creating the illusion that they are "floating". This design offers a sleek, minimalist look and is ideal for modern or contemporary spaces.

SHELF WITH BRACKETS:
Hardwood shelves installed with brackets feature visible support brackets that are attached to the wall to hold the shelf in place. These shelves tend to have a more traditional or industrial aesthetic, with the brackets adding both structural support and visual interest. This style can be made in any thickness required.

What are your measurements?

You will want to accurately measure the space where the hardwood shelf will be installed. We will need to know the width, length, and thickness.

The standard thickness for a floating shelf is 1-3/4" thick.

Hardwood shelves that use a bracket can range from 3/4" - 2" thick.

Would you like it finished?

Our finished products come with each side flattened, sanded, and finished with Osmo Polyx-Oil Satin Clear finish to enhance and protect the wood. These shelves will arrive ready to hang with no extra work!

Prefer raw/unfinished?
While our unfinished shelves will still arrive smooth with even sides, we will not sand nor apply any finishing products. Perfect for people who’d like to customize the final product with their own hands!

FAQs about Hardwood Floating Shelves with HOVR Bracket

BUILDING & DESIGN

How much weight can your HOVR floating shelves hold?

The answer depends on 4 factors:

  1. Is the shelf hung with a regular or slim style bracket?
  2. Does the shelf span across at least 2 wall studs?
  3. How far from the wall is the decor or items on the shelf?
  4. How heavy is the shelf itself?

In general, an 8" deep shelf, with a regular bracket, spanning across 2 studs with the load positioned 4" from the wall can support 300lbs. A shelf with the same characteristics using the slim bracket can support 125lbs. The farther from the wall the load is centered on, the less weight that can safely be supported. We are able to provide you with the weight of the shelf once you have picked the wood type you’d like your shelf crafted with to ensure safe decorating.

What are the thickness restrictions for the shelf?

Our aluminum brackets are available in regular or slim versions. The regular bracket can be installed into a shelf minimum 1.75" (45mm) thick. The slim can be installed into a shelf minimum 1.50" (38mm) thick. Shelves and mantels up to 6" thick can be hung using the HOVR bracket.

Does the weight of the shelf itself matter or influence the maximum load capacity?

Yes and no. The load capacity of the shelf does include the weight of the shelf itself. However, the difference in weight between a white oak shelf and a poplar shelf (10" x 48") is only about 10lbs, so the choice of material doesn't affect the capacity to any significant degree. We are able to provide you with the weight of the shelf once you have picked the wood type you’d like your shelf crafted with to ensure safe decorating.

How long does it take to build a floating hardwood shelf?

Without HOVR bracket

We can build this style of shelf within 5-7 business days.

With HOVR Bracket

The building process is more complex so we require 2-3 weeks to complete the shelf. If you would like us to sand and finish, an additional week is needed.

Should you require a faster timeline, we can sometimes accommodate that. Please send us an email prior to placing your order.

Do you offer hardwood shelves in any other wood species?

We can likely build you a custom wood shelf in most of our available wood species. Feel free to connect with us for more information.

INSTALLATION

How do I install the floating shelf?

Installing your floating shelf will depend on many factors. We recommend you visiting the HOVR website and watching their very helpful instructional videos.

Does it matter if I am installing these shelves on a tiled wall as opposed to drywall?

Yes. If your shelves will be installed on a tiled surface, please let us know on your order. The bracket must be recessed slightly deeper if installed on a tile surface to ensure invisibility and safety.
