Black Walnut’s heartwood ranges from pale brown to a dark chocolate brown. It is also known for having a red, purple, or grey cast and the sapwood ranges from pale yellow to almost white. It can present grain patterns like curl, crotch, and burl.
Black Walnut is a fan favourite of furniture makers in North America. Once you’ve worked Walnut you will quickly plan for the next time you will use it. The rich brown colour is unmistakable and pieces that live near sunlight lighten to a dark honey colour. The wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties making it an easy choice for most woodworkers.
If you would like to do the milling yourself - try our 4/4 Rough Cut Walnut Lumber for a more budget friendly version.
What can you expect?
We will carefully handpick a high quality board for you. We pay close attention to the wood species characteristics so we can send you a board that well represents each wood type. You can expect to have some sapwood although we do try our best to select boards that have at least one face that is only heartwood.
In order to offer more protective packing for shipping - our lengths are often 1/4" less than sizes listed. Need a longer length? Please email us for a quote.
S4S Lumber
Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.
The term "surfaced" or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.
For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”
Rough Cut Lumber

For example: 4/4 x (5-6”) x 24”
You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.
I ordered two 48" pieces of this 8/4 walnut and the wood is gorgeous! I have not used the wood in a project yet, but I can't wait to start working it.
Each board had a good amount of snipe.

Laser cuts through it clean and the colour is great
This batch did not cut out well with my laser, lost quarter of almost every sheet, plenty of waste
