Black Walnut’s heartwood ranges from pale brown to a dark chocolate brown. It is also known for having a red, purple, or grey cast and the sapwood ranges from pale yellow to almost white. It can present grain patterns like curl, crotch, and burl.
Black Walnut is a fan favourite of furniture makers in North America. Once you’ve worked Walnut you will quickly plan for the next time you will use it. The rich brown colour is unmistakable and pieces that live near sunlight lighten to a dark honey colour. The wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties making it an easy choice for most woodworkers.
Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Walnut Lumber.

S4S Lumber
Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.
The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.
For example: 3/4” x 5-1/4” x 24”
Used the walnut for a bow, haven’t used the others yet.
Ordered some S4S walnut and wenge from KJP select hardwood. Shipping was quick and everything arrived packaged very securely. The wood was blemish free and looked great. One of the walnut boards was slightly warped however so it will need attention before I can use it. Otherwise all was ok with the order :)
4/4 Rough Cut Walnut Lumber
This material is a game-changer in the world laser engraving! The quality of the plywood is exceptional, with a perfectly smooth, perfectly flat surface (no surprise here) that makes it a joy to work with. The finish feels a little plastic, but I understand it’s an acrylic coating over the maple fibre, which I love. Even laser-fog burn marks wipe off with a damp cloth — no masking needed. The maple grain is pronounced and it cuts cleanly and sands beautifully. 100% will purchase again.
These work well with my Festool 125 RO in the fine mode as they leave no sanding marks compared to non festool discs.
Very satisfied....the oak grain was beautiful...milling was A1 and glued together with no problems....will buy from here again
