What is the difference between Domestic and Exotic Wood species?

Domestic Hardwoods:

Domestic hardwoods refer to any and all species found in North America like Oak, Walnut, Birch, Maple, Hickory, Ash and Cherry. Domestic woods are not subject to import regulations.

Exotic Hardwoods:

Exotic Hardwoods are species found around the world, usually coming from the more tropical areas such as Africa, South America and Central America. Some common exotic species are Purple Heart, Padauk, Wenge, Osage Orange, Mahogany and Iroko.

Why can I not currently order exotic woods for import into the USA?

There are many rules surrounding the import of exotic wood and timber products into the USA, and a successful shipment requires strict adherence to permitting and certification requirements. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) enforces the declarations of conformance with the LACEY Act and an import permit specific to each entry.

What is KJP doing about this?

At KJP the supply of exotic woods into the USA is an important part of our business and we are working hard to establish shipping protocols to be compliant with these USDA requirements as we did before. We will resume the export of those exotic species you have come to love just as soon as we can.
