Steel Straight Edge - OneTIME Tool

This OneTIME tool has expired and can no longer be purchased.

Your machinery adjustments can only be as accurate as the tool you use to set them. Try to set your jointer beds up with a straight edge that isn’t straight and you’ll spend a frustrating and unproductive afternoon getting nowhere. Woodpeckers lastest OneTIME Tools, the Steel Straight Edges, are ground to a tolerance of .0002" per foot…and no, that’s not a typo…two TEN-thousandths of an inch.  They make them in three lengths (12", 24" and 36") and two styles (square on both edges or one square edge and one beveled edge).

Woodpeckers builds these Steel Straight Edges to be reference tools. Each one is 7/32" thick and 2-1/2" wide, giving them the heft and footing to stand on their own (on the square edge) while you check for light or use a feeler gauge. The beveled-edges excel when doing visual checks, such as checking a plane sole for flat or checking machined stock for straightness.

When do you need a Straight Edge this precise? Here are just a few examples.

Start at your table saw. A warped or twisted table can cause all sorts of phantom errors. With a Woodpeckers Steel Straight Edge you can find out for sure whether your table is truly (or at least acceptably) flat.

Then move to your jointer. Set the Steel Straight Edge on the outfeed table, bring the infeed table up close to the straight edge and use a feeler gauge to verify that the infeed table is parallel with the outfeed table.

At the thickness planer make sure the bed rollers are the correct distance above the bed and that any bolted-on extensions are correctly aligned.

Check the alignment of infeed and outfeed fences on router tables and shapers.

Now go to your workbench and check the soles of your hand planes to be sure they’re flat in both directions.

When the tool set-up is all done, don’t bury your Steel Straight Edge in a drawer. Use it to check stock you’ve machined to verify flat and straight, and check to make sure it stays that way through temperature and humidity changes. And if you happen to have two of them, they make incredible winding sticks.

The two styles are available in three sizes. Get just the size and style you want or save some money with either of the complete sets.

Like all of Woodpeckers OneTIME Tools, the Steel Straight Edges are only made to order, precisely machined and carefully inspected in their Strongsville, Ohio factory (just south of Cleveland).
